How to Store Hair Extensions Properly

How to store hair extensions? Getting into a suitable storage routine with hair extensions is crucial, as good habits equal longer-lasting extensions. Think about it: Who doesn’t want their hair extensions to last twice as long? And it only takes minutes to put them away. Why not do it?

Why Do You Need to Store Hair Extensions Properly?

In short, a proper storage routine to store hair extensions properly prevents the hair extension from tangling, matting, and sustaining damage. It helps maintain extension quality and maximize extensions’ lifespans.

If you are a hair vendor or salon owner who keeps a relatively large inventory of hair extensions, storing them in a cool, dry, and dark place will effectively keep them from heat, sunlight, and moisture. Exposure to these elements can cause the colors of hair extensions to fade and their hair to break. If you store hair extensions correctly, they will stay in good shape and keep their elegant, long-lasting style.

What Are the Key Tips on How to Store Hair Extensions?

Regardless if you sell hair extensions or are a hair extension wearer, the idea behind storing hair extensions properly is similar: keep them apart, out of sunlight, away from heat and moisture, and in the dark. Here are some valuable tips on storing hair extensions correctly.

Using a Substance That Soaks up Moisture

Moisture is one of the causes of tangling, matting, and even breakage in hair fibers. They are also ideal for bacterial growth, which causes the hair to stink and mold.

Make sure you store hair extensions with substances that soak up moisture, like silica gel packets or uncooked rice. For example, when pocketing a set of hair extensions in a box, put some silica gel packets in the box, too. The hair extensions will stay nice and dry and last longer if the extra moisture around them is soaked up.

Storing Your Hair Extensions Separately

It is essential to store hair extensions separately, as it helps to avoid tangling and damage to the extensions. When hair extensions are held together or in a tangled mess, the hair strands can easily get knotted or intertwined, making it difficult to untangle them. Damage or breakage is unavoidable if you are in a hurry and must force yourself to separate them.

Store hair extensions separately. This will make it easier to find a specific piece when you need it. But with this one, we have to manage them properly, number them, or catalog them if possible.

Clean Your Hair Extensions Before Storing Them

Ensure your hair extensions are clean and free of any product buildup before you put them away. It’s especially so if you are a hair extension wearer. Before you store hair extensions, always make sure you clean them as thoroughly as possible.

Hair extension wearers probably care more about how to store clip in hair extensions or halo hair extensions. They are temporary hair extensions that can be put on and removed whenever the wearer wants. When not in use, they are more likely to be stored. Permanent hair extensions remain in the person’s hair until they are reinstalled. Then they stay in the hair for another period before another reinstallation or when they need to be replaced or thrown away.

To store hair extensions properly, and with clip-in or halo hair extensions, clean them every 6-8 wears or before storing them for an extended period. Be sure to use sulfate-free and paraben-free shampoos and conditioners. Wash your hair extensions in a sink, ensuring they are free of oil and buildup. With much oil remaining, your hair extensions can hardly stay in place.

Get a cotton towel, spread it flat, and lay the hair extension on it. Dab it dry, hang it on a hair stand, and let it air dry. Then, follow other hair extension storage guidelines to store hair extensions properly.

Brush Your Hair Extensions Before Storing Them

Brushing hair extensions may have more to do with hair extension wearers who need to worry about how to store clip-in hair extensions and halo hair extensions. Hair vendors with a large stock of neatly packed new hair extensions are unlikely to be bothered with brushing them.

However, suppose you are a hair vendor with a significant amount of samples on display that have been there for quite some time and now need to be put away. In that case, you must follow these guidelines for washing and brushing hair extensions.

How to brush hair extensions: The idea behind brushing hair extensions before storing them is to remove tangles or knots. So they will remain in perfect condition until the next time you use them or show them to a buyer.

Ideally, a soft-bristled brush and a wide-tooth comb are the best choices for detangling extensions. Start near the roots, up to the tip, to avoid hair breakage or pulling. Be gentle when brushing near the bonding points, as these areas can be more fragile.

Follow the other steps and procedures for how to store hair extensions after brushing them.

Room and Environment Required

After washing and brushing, choosing the perfect room or environment for hair extensions is particularly important. As was already said, hair extensions need a dark, cool, and dry place.

  • Ensure the Room Is Cool and Dry

Find a room or a space that’s cool and dry, free of excess moisture. When wet, the roots of hair extensions are more likely to get tangled than the roots of our natural hair, which can absorb moisture and stay damp and healthy. Detangling the hair can be a heavy task for you, and the hair extensions are easily damaged during detangling.

  • Keep Hair Extensions away from Direct Sunlight

The sun can naturally result in the fading of hair extension colors. Too much sunlight can also dry up the hair, making it brittle and easy to break. Store them in a cabinet, drawer, or big storage box where the heat and sunlight will not get through. If you need to transport hair extensions, store them in a protective case or bag to shield them from the sun.

Re-boxing and Hanging Options for Hair Extension Storage

We’ve determined what kind of environments are the best for hair extension storage. But before getting them into the correct room or environment, boxing, packaging, or hanging (for daily wearers) them properly is equally critical.

For example, putting hair extensions in a container spacious enough to keep them from tangling and crushing against each other. A hair extension storage bag or case made of satin or silk is also a good choice, as the material reduces friction and keeps moisture from building up.

You could also use a clear plastic container with a lid or a hanger for hair extensions. Using the proper containers, cases, or hangers, you can extend the lifespan of hair extensions and look good each time you wear them.

Placing Hair Extensions Inside a Box

Storing hair extensions inside a box is straightforward. There’s no requirement for a particular type of box. That’s because later on, you need to keep the box away in a good room or environment, away from heat, sunlight, and moisture. As long as the package is of good quality, that’s good enough.

You can use a shoebox or the packaging box the hair extension came with. As mentioned above, before boxing a hair extension, especially if you are a clip-in or halo hair extension wearer, wash and brush the hair extension properly before boxing them.

If the hair extension set comes in wefts, place all wefts on one side, one on top of the other, and then roll them up nicely together. And at last, slowly and gently place them inside the box.

Hang Hair Extensions on Hangers

As a wearer of clip-in or halo hair extensions, you may need to put it on and remove it daily. Or if your shop has a lot of hair extension samples on display, and you need to store them away for a while but will soon put them out again. Re-packaging and unpackaging them takes a considerable amount of time. Now, hanging them up and storing them away is a convenient choice.

If the hair extension is dirty or greasy, wash it, dry it, and brush or comb it before hanging it up. If it is clean and dry, just brush or comb it through. After that, you only need to clip it to the hanger. If the hair extension comes in wefts, clip the wefts on the hangers, one next to the other.

Brush the wefts again while they are on the hanger(s), and then put the hanger(s) nicely inside your closet or dresser, where there’s enough space. And the area inside the closet or dresser can protect the extensions from heat, excess sunlight, and moisture. You can also use regular hangers with the right place and room to store them.

Putting Hair Extensions in a Hair Extension Storage Bag

For the most professional way to store hair extensions, you can buy a hair extension storage bag to put them in. It is a hair extension hanger with a zippered bag around it. It protects the hair extension(s) from dirt and other potential causes of damage.

Whether you are a regular hair extension wearer, a hair extension vendor, or a salon or cosmetology school owner, you can safely keep it inside a closet or cabinet. You can also travel with hair extension storage bags containing your extensions.

How to Rejuvenate Poorly Stored Extensions

As mentioned, poorly stored hair extensions are prone to breakage or a reduced lifespan. However, before you read our article, you may have already stored your hair extensions poorly. And now they need rescue or revitalization. You only need to wash the tangled hair extensions and store them again correctly.

  1. Detangling the hair: By now, the hair extensions are likely tangled. Gently comb through the hair with a wide-tooth comb or a detangling brush. Start from the bottom and work your way up to avoid pulling or breaking the hair.
  2. Wash the extensions properly: Use a gentle shampoo and conditioner to properly wash the hair extensions, removing dirt or buildup that may have accumulated. Rinse thoroughly with cool water and gently squeeze out the excess water.
  3. Deep conditioning: Apply a deep conditioner to the hair extensions and leave it on for at least half an hour. You can apply nourishing oils, too, such as Argan oil. This will help nourish the hair, especially human hair.
  4. Air dry: Allow the extensions to air dry completely before styling or storing them. Try not to use heat-styling tools. If you have to, use a heat protectant.
  5. Store again: Follow some or all of the above steps to store hair extensions correctly.

If your extensions are severely damaged, replace them with a new set. Proper care and storage can help your hair extensions last longer, so follow the care instructions that the manufacturer or stylist gives you.

Conclusion

Properly storing hair extensions is essential if you want to keep their quality and make them last longer. But how to store hair extensions? The key idea is to keep the hair extensions apart to avoid tangling and keep them in a cool, dry, dark space to avoid heat and sunlight. The container could be the hair extension’s original box, a shoe box, or a professional hair extension bag.

● What hobbies and interests do you have?

I enjoy exercising. That’s a very important part of my life. I’m a super active person.

● Do you have a phobia? If you do, what is it?

No, not that I know of. I’m a very realistic person. If you mention outlandish stuff like aliens, monster in the bush, I’d be out of my mind.

● What is something you would love to do in the future?

I want to learn how to swim. I know it might sound a bit sarcastic, as I just mentioned that I enjoy doing exercise. Unfortunately, swimming hasn’t been on my list. I think I better catch up on that.

● What wig would you wear if you wore one and why?

I’d give HW1 a try. It looks natural and beautiful. Though we categorize it as a medical wig, almost any female can wear it. It’s got a lace mesh base, breathable, and flexible. You don’t need glue or tape to fix it to your head. Pretty easy, and it gives you all the long hair look a girl could want.

I recomend HS25V. Oftentimes I’d introduce this model to my new clients to start with, so they can introduce this to their new clients see if hair systems are what really suit them, before they carry on with lace or mono hair systems.

New Australia. When it first came out in early 2023, it made me top of sales.
