Crown of Courage: Free Human Hair Wigs for Cancer Warriors

“It’s just hair.”
If you’ve ever stood in the shower and watched clumps of your hair rinse down the drain because of chemo, you know that’s not true at all. It’s not “just hair.” It’s a punch in the gut. It’s this loud, constant reminder that you’re sick, even on the days you’re trying to feel normal.
Hair loss during cancer treatment isn’t something you just shrug off. It messes with how you see yourself, how you step outside, and sometimes whether you even want to look in the mirror.
That’s why we started Crown of Courage. It’s a program that offers free human hair wigs to people going through cancer who are losing their hair and also struggling with the cost of a wig. We team up with kind, willing salons and stylists who don’t just “put a wig on,” but really help bring it to life on the person wearing it.
Why Hair Loss Hits So Hard
For a lot of us, hair is part of who we are. It’s tied up with femininity, strength, personality, and that basic feeling of “this is me.”
When chemo takes that away, it can feel like one more thing you didn’t ask for and didn’t get to choose.
You’re already juggling appointments, scans, side effects, bills, and a ton of emotions. Then, on top of all that, you may suddenly look in the mirror and not recognize the person staring back at you. A bare scalp or thinning hair isn’t just about appearance; it hits your confidence, your body image, and how comfortable you feel being out in the world.
Many warriors feel the shift immediately in how people look at them and speak to them. Our identity is often tied to what we do, how we look, and whether we feel accepted. When hair is gone, the world can respond differently – awkwardness, pity, or distance. We sense those changes, and it can make everything feel heavier.
What Is the Crown of Courage Program?
Crown of Courage is our way of quietly stepping in where there’s real need. The program is designed for cancer patients who have lost their hair during treatment and cannot afford a proper human hair wig.
We provide free, professionally customized human hair wigs and work through partner salons and stylists who are willing to offer their time and skill to deliver wigs to these warriors. Instead of just shipping boxes to the one in need, we want every wig to come with a real fitting, real styling, and real care.
We launched the program by setting aside an initial group of 20 wigs specifically for this purpose — and our goal is to keep growing it with the help of salons and stylists around the world.
How the Crown of Courage Program Works
Crown of Courage is launched as a partnership. Most of the time, it starts in the salon chair. A stylist notices a client going through chemo. Maybe she’s wearing hats more often, talking about hair falling out, or quietly mentioning how uncomfortable she feels without it. Money is tight, medical bills are piling up, and a good human hair wig isn’t affordable.
If you, a hair expert, realize there’s both chemo-related hair loss and financial strain, you can talk to the client about our Crown of Courage program and help them apply. Once the application is approved, we prepare and send a tailor-made human hair wig that meets her needs, such as color family, hair texture, and length.
From there, you invite her in, often in a more private space, and treat it like what it is: a special appointment. You help adjust the fit, trim, and shape it so it suits her face and personality, and walk her through how to put it on, take it off, and care for it at home.
We provide the wig as a gift. Salons provide the time, skill, and safe space. Together, that’s what makes Crown of Courage work.
Who the Program Is For
Our Crown of Courage program is to help cancer patients get a top-quality wig they can’t afford. And we need partner salons to help us fit and deliver them to the warriors.
If you’re a cancer warrior, the best starting point is usually a salon or stylist you trust. If they’re willing to help, they can contact us and apply for a free wig on your behalf. If you apply for a wig for self-use, we’ll do our best to connect you with a partner salon in your area for the fitting and styling. But there may be a waiting period depending on location and availability.
Stories from the Chair
Behind every wig is a real person, with a real life outside of cancer.
Tara’s Story

Tara heard the words “stage 4” and “incurable” and felt her world go dark for a moment. Her oncologists couldn’t offer much certainty, but her family stepped in as her anchor. Her mom took her in for treatment, her loved ones drove her to chemo, coworkers started a fundraiser, and showed up in “Team Tara” shirts. There were cards, videos, and so many “keep fighting” messages. The Crown of Courage campaign feels, to her, like one more arm around her shoulders — a reminder that even women who’ve lost their hair and their income still deserve to feel beautiful and seen.

Gianna’s Story

Gianna has been fighting a rare kind of sarcoma for about a year now. She’s been through heavy chemo, radiation, and some big surgeries. It’s a lot for anyone. Out of everything, she says losing her hair was one of the hardest parts. When your hair goes, it can feel like a big chunk of your confidence goes with it, too. For her, wigs have become a lifesaver. On days when she feels worn out, she doesn’t have to stress about her hair. She just throws on a wig and can get on with her day. It doesn’t magically fix everything, but it makes facing the world a little easier.
To Gianna, a wig isn’t just about looking “put together” — it actually gives her the push to keep going. Her message to other women in treatment is straight from the heart: keep going, don’t give up, put that wig on and own it. You got this. I am so proud of you.

Melody’s Story

Then there’s Melody, a 37-year-old mom of four. She found out she had invasive breast cancer in April 2025, and her whole world flipped. By the time she shared her experience with our camera, she’d just finished 20 weeks of chemo and was now getting ready for surgery, radiation, and later on, reconstructive surgery. She says the week before her first chemo was one of the most emotional weeks of her life—scary, overwhelming, and full of unknowns. After that first treatment, when she realized her body could handle it, she felt a little relief.
But the hair loss still hit her hard. Her hair was a big part of how she saw herself, and watching it fall out felt like something was being taken from her that she wasn’t ready to lose. Getting a wig helped shift that. It made her feel feminine again, and more like Melody—not just “the cancer patient.” On top of that, she was surrounded by support from friends and family: people bringing meals, helping with laundry, and stepping in with small, practical things that meant the world.

Stories like Gianna’s and Melody’s are the reason Crown of Courage exists—not to pretend cancer isn’t there, but to help people still feel like themselves while they’re in the middle of the fight.
For Salons and Stylists
If you’re a salon owner or stylist, you can play a huge role in this program. You’re the person who sits face-to-face with someone dealing with hair loss. You hear their worries, see their body language, and know when a wig could change more than just their look.
By joining Crown of Courage, you can help identify clients who are struggling, support them through the application process, and then give them a calm, kind environment to try on their new hair. It may be one appointment on your schedule, but for them, it can be the moment they start to feel a bit more like themselves again.
In return for your time and heart, Newtimes Hair offers shared visibility on our website and social media, along with an official “Certified Caring Salon” badge you can show online and in your salon. But more than that, you become part of a caring alliance, using your expertise as a way to give people strength.
For Patients Looking for Help
If you’re in treatment right now, losing your hair, and worried about money, you are who this program is for.
The simplest next step is to talk to a salon or stylist you feel comfortable with and ask if they’d be open to helping you apply for the Crown of Courage program. If you apply for a wig on your own, we’ll do our best to connect you with one of our partner salons near you for fitting and styling. Because this is a real, hands-on service, there may be a wait depending on where you live and how many applications are active, but our goal is to support you as much as we can.
You shouldn’t have to face cancer and hair loss alone, and you shouldn’t have to give up feeling like yourself just because a wig isn’t in the budget.
Why We Call It Crown of Courage
At the end of the day, this is not about vanity. It’s about dignity.
We call it Crown of Courage because we see every wig as a small, wearable reminder of the strength it takes to get up, show up, and keep going through cancer treatment. It doesn’t erase the hard days, but it can make them a little easier to face.
To the salons and stylists who want to help: we’d love to partner with you.
To the cancer warriors reading this: your courage is the reason this program exists. You deserve to feel seen, supported, and beautiful — even in the hardest chapters of your story.
